FAQ

Common questions

What legal requirements apply to a small business website?
Most US business websites need an accurate privacy policy (California's CalOPPA alone covers most sites with a contact form), an accessible design built to WCAG 2.1 AA, CAN-SPAM-compliant marketing emails, honest reviews and endorsements, and sales-tax registration where they have nexus. Our compliance checklist covers each item.
Do state privacy laws apply to my small business?
Usually not — most apply only above thresholds such as 100,000 state residents' data a year. Texas and Nebraska use SBA small-business status instead. See state privacy laws compared.
Are these guides legal advice?
No. They are general information written to help you ask the right questions. Fees, thresholds, and deadlines change, so confirm details with the relevant state agency or a licensed attorney or CPA.
Is AE Themes affiliated with aThemes?
No. AE Themes is an independent publication. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to aThemes or any WordPress theme or plugin company, and it does not sell themes or plugins.
